Eisenkappel is located in the heart of the Geopark Karavanken.
Opposite the Information office of the Obir dripstone caves lies a brand new information centre of the geopark, equipped with cutting-edge technology.

Since 2013 the Geopark Karavanke is a member of the European Geoparks Network (EGN) and the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). In November 2015 Geopark Karavanke became an UNESCO Global Geopark. Geopark Karavanke is an area with a particular geological heritage (example: Karavanke as the meeting point of the African and Eurasian plates), as well as natural and cultural heritage, where a sustainable economic development strategy is implemented, active participation in education and raising public awarness. Within the fourteen members, 9 lie on the Austrian side in the region of Southern Carinthia, and 5 in Slovenia.
